Speed still exists
On tonight’s run, which was already going pretty well, I decided a mile or so in that I’d do a half-mile interval toward the end. Between miles 2.6 and 3.1 I did just that in 3:51.
I felt so good that I kept that pace going for another half mile. The result was the same — 3:51.
If you would have told me even two weeks ago that I could run a mile in less than 8 minutes, I would have laughed in your face. After a good run last Monday and mostly good running last week, I knew that I had some speed in me … I just didn’t know what.
I felt pretty good, so I think I could sustain that pace over a few miles. As I transition out of a “recovery” mind frame to a “training” mind frame with the Monument Avenue 10k in a few weeks, my confidence level is in a great place. I needed this run to assure myself that I’m doing the right thing. While I don’t see myself setting a PR in a few weeks, I do see myself doing something to set the tone for the rest of the spring.
I have vowed to come back stronger and smarter and this mini speed session is a small step in fulfilling that promise to myself.

You would have laughed at me 2 weeks ago, because I think you could have been running fast for a while now… What would be a PR for the 10k?
48:11, two years ago in the same race. This race is pretty flat compared to what I run on every day, so it's not unrealistic to hit it. It's not a main focus though.
Great job David, half the battle of recovery is in your head. I too am rehab-ing an ITB injury and we certainly need the confidence boosters here and there. As well as some distraction to not focus so intensely on every fiber from the hip to the knee and subsequently overthink every step. Keep up the good work. Reading your blog gives me a lot of hope!
Great run Dave. I like what you said, setting the tone for the Spring. That is so important and it is such a long season of training and running. I am sure there will be many PR's on your end of year report card.
Great job I am sure you will do great on the April 2 run
