11 things: 11/11/11

Time to get back to some random things for my “11 things” post this month.

1. Today may be the coolest date in my lifetime. 11/11/11. It beats any of those other same number happenings for month/date/year in the 12 years it will happen in my lifetime.

2. October and November are far and away the best months of the year for so many reasons. Great weather, clearer skies, eating soup without feeling weird.

3. With each passing week, I’m getting closer to being a former NASCAR fan.

4. People keep adding me on Google+. It had potential, but it sucked. That is all.

5. There is no “s” on daylight saving time. Just like there is no “s” on Kroger.

6. For less than $5, you can get a broccoli and cheese baked potato and a large chili from Wendy’s. It makes a great lunch.

7. Somebody danced a little too hard last weekend …

8. I haven’t had a Magic Hat in a while. Somebody go buy me a winter variety pack please.

9. As much as I’d like to listen to Christmas music now, I’m holding firm to my stance of not listening to any until the day after Thanksgiving.

10. I’m going to the Virginia Safari Park this weekend. If you’ve never gone and you’re within a couple hours of Natural Bridge, GO. It’s a wild experience.

11. OK, so I have to mention something about running … wait … no. Nevermind. Enjoy the number 11 today.

A most-ever moment

One of the biggest lessons I learned from last year was to not get too caught up in the “most ever” or “best ever” moments. While they’re great and worth celebrating, it’s very easy to lose focus if I dwell on them too much.

Today is one of those moments to celebrate, but I also need to quickly move on. I’ll talk about it now and drink a Magic Hat or two to celebrate, but tomorrow is September and there are still 45 days until the Baltimore Marathon. FOCUS.

So … what’s the big deal?

Today’s tired feeling 3.3-mile run puts me at 134.5 miles for August. It’s the most miles in a month ever, edging out 133 miles in October 2007. I actually fell about 6 miles shy of my goal, as well as not getting to 40 miles last week, but I knew ahead of time those were big miles for me. The 40 will come soon enough though.

Similar to how I felt a month ago, how I got to that number is what is important.

  • 7 runs out of 22 were under a 9-minute pace. That’s not quite as good as July, but this month I had a few more shorter and slower (and very important) recovery runs.
  • A solid effort in the Lynchburg Half Marathon.
  • Breaking 22 minutes in the Fab 5k.
  • I ran a mountain.
And now it’s time to focus on September …

11 things, birthday edition

My birthday is coming up in less than 2 weeks, so I thought I’d take this month’s installment of 11 things to give you a list of things you can buy me for my birthday.

1. Lottery tickets. I love scratch-off tickets and haven’t had any since Christmas.

beer, Magic Hat

2. Magic Hat #9. To me, it’s the best beer out there. I haven’t had any of that in a while either.

3. A new or slightly used Honda Accord. I can’t afford one, so just buy me one. It’s that simple.

4. A vacation to Colorado. I hear it’s nice out there all the time. I need summer relief already.

5. Shorts. I haven’t bought a new pair of shorts in a few years. My wife thinks it’s funny how old some of my clothes are; I think it’s testament to how I’ve stayed the same size for a long time. Either way, I could seriously use a couple of new pairs of shorts.

6. Camping gear. I haven’t been in the woods in a long time and sometime in the next year I’d like to take my son camping. New sleeping bags would be nice.

7. Trail shoes. That would be a bonus with camping gear.

Injinji, socks, running

8. Injinji socks. I love them for running, but I’d like more for regular everyday use. I’m trying to keep 11 things non-running related, so if I wear them every day when I don’t run, it makes it non-running related, right?

9. Japanese dinner. I love Japanese food and I’m starting to wonder why it’s been so long since I’ve had any.

10. Good pizza. I guess typing Japanese food made me hungry. Now I want a good pizza.

Relay for Life, running, donations

11. A donation to the charity of your choice. My recent posts about Relay for Life are making me passionate about doing the right thing and helping others. While most of these other things are just jokes, take $5 and donate it to cause that benefits other people. You’ll feel better because of it.
