On tonight’s run, which was already going pretty well, I decided a mile or so in that I’d do a half-mile interval toward the end. Between miles 2.6 and 3.1 I did just that in 3:51.
I felt so good that I kept that pace going for another half mile. The result was the same — 3:51.
If you would have told me even two weeks ago that I could run a mile in less than 8 minutes, I would have laughed in your face. After a good run last Monday and mostly good running last week, I knew that I had some speed in me … I just didn’t know what.
I felt pretty good, so I think I could sustain that pace over a few miles. As I transition out of a “recovery” mind frame to a “training” mind frame with the Monument Avenue 10k in a few weeks, my confidence level is in a great place. I needed this run to assure myself that I’m doing the right thing. While I don’t see myself setting a PR in a few weeks, I do see myself doing something to set the tone for the rest of the spring.
I have vowed to come back stronger and smarter and this mini speed session is a small step in fulfilling that promise to myself.
