For several years I’ve had an idea to do a race in costume. It was simple really — someone is a hunter and another person is an animal.
Today, that idea became reality.

My sister, Heather, and I hit the Monument Avenue 10k in Richmond in style as The Hunter and The Hunted. And despite the Richmond Times-Dispatch judges’ lapse in judgement in not even placing us in the top 3 for the contest (I kid … sort of), we had a great time. (I think we didn’t win because she’s holding the bow the wrong way …)
I also helped pace Heather to a PR — 59:04 unofficially, setting a 3 minute PR for her for this distance and 10 minutes better than her time from last year’s Monument Avenue 10k.
Having never really paced anyone before in a race, I must say that I got a lot out of it.
I knew what mile times we had to hit to break an hour and get her to a PR. Despite having a deer head on my head, I settled us into a comfortable 9:30 pace and pretty much held it there.
I got the great satisfaction of being a “coach” at the end when she said she might throw up, but she was able to hold it off. Maybe next time.
It also marks off one of my 13 goals for 2013 by us running together, and I certainly hope it’s not the last.

I totally saw you (or rather… your deer head….) at around 8:00 as we made our way to our corral. Love the concept!!!
Congrats to your sister on her PR. It was a picture perfect day for a race, that’s for sure!
Great job!
Great job !!! Wish I could have been there.
Way to go! Congrats to both of you!!
Love the costume idea, you should definitely have been in the Top3. I hope to sub-60min in a 10K, but I haven’t even races one yet. Great job pacing your sister, congrats to her on her new PR!
Look your picture made it on a blog!
